About

Hi! I’m Laura McKenna and I’m running for School Board in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

I’m a long time resident of Bergen County. On most weekends, you can find me scouring estate sales for old books, making big dinners for family and friends, or buying vegetables at Ridgewood’s farmer’s market. (More personal info here.)

I have thirty years of experience in education as a teacher, professor with a speciality in education policy, researcher, journalist, writer, volunteer and parent. I have a BA from SUNY Binghamton, an MA from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from CUNY Graduate Center. (More professional info here.)

I sent two children through Ridgewood’s schools. As a parent of a young man with autism and epilepsy, I have been heavily involved in supporting the special education community in Ridgewood (More volunteer info here.)

If elected, I will bring all my passion, experience, and knowledge to guide education decision making in Ridgewood. I support evidence-based curriculum in math and English to raise test scores. I have spoken out at recent Board of Education meetings about the need to improve efforts to promote mental health, to remediate against Covid learning lag, to manage staffing issues, and the need to have a more effective School Board that supports administrators. (More information about my platform and priorities here.)

I am running with Julie Mchedlishvili for the two opening positions. Together we have fifty years of education policy experience.
